How to reduce screen time

Seven steps that change cues and friction instead of willpower — plus why most attempts fail.

Choosing your tools.

What are the best digital detox tools?
The tools that work fall into three groups: hardware that removes the habit (dumbphones such as Light Phone, Wise Phone or a Nokia), friction apps that insert a pause before you open a feed (one sec, Opal, Freedom), and physical replacements such as an alarm clock, a paper notebook and a wired pair of headphones. Start with hardware placement and notifications before buying anything.
What is a dumbphone and who should get one?
A dumbphone is a mobile device without an app store, infinite scroll or push notifications — calls, texts and usually maps. It suits people who have tried software limits twice and still override them, because the app simply is not there to open.
Are there apps that actually reduce screen time?
Yes, but the effective ones add friction rather than report statistics. Blockers that force a delay before an app opens reliably reduce pickups; built-in dashboards mostly measure. If you dismiss every limit you set, the answer is a hardware change, not another app.
Are digital detox retreats worth it?
A retreat is a good reset and a poor system. It works if you use it to decide what changes at home; on its own, usage returns to baseline within days of getting back. Pair one with permanent changes to notifications and where the phone charges.
